Come ogni anno, alle Orsoline di Como sono arrivate due docenti eccezionali. Grazie alla collaborazione con una delle Università più prestigiose al mondo, l’Istituto ha ospitato due ragazze provenienti dall’Institute of Technology Massachusetts. Nell’ambito del progetto Global Teaching Lab le giovani hanno avuto il compito di spiegare le discipline scientifiche in lingua inglese (fisica e biologia). Abbiamo rivolto alcune domande ad Ellie e Amanda per conoscerle meglio.

Perché hai scelto il MIT? Come hai fatto a entrare al MIT?
Why did you choose MIT? How did you get admission into MIT?
A: Ho scelto l’MIT perché la tecnologia pervade tutte le materie che studiamo qui. MIT è la miglior scuola al mondo per la promozione della ricerca e dell’innovazione. Tutto ciò che facciamo qui implica lavoro di gruppo e ci sono professori bravissimi con classi piccole. Inoltre l’MIT è situato in posto bellissimo, cioè a Boston. Per entrare all’MIT ho fatto richiesta durante l’autunno del mio ultimo anno di high school e sono stata accettata in dicembre. Ho fatto molte lezione impegnative di matematica e scienze per prepararmi.
I chose MIT because I knew I wanted to pursue science or engineering, and MIT is at the cutting edge of many fields of science. I'm not quite sure how I got in, but I had to submit test scores, essays, and letters of recommendation from my teachers.
E: Ho scelto il MIT, perché volevo studiare scienze o ingegneria, e il MIT rappresenta l'avanguardia in questi campi. Non so bene come sia riuscita ad accedervi, ho dovuto passare dei test, scrivere dei saggi e presentare delle lettere di raccomandazione da parte dei miei insegnanti.
I chose MIT because technology is infused in every subject that we do at MIT. MIT is the top school in the world that fosters research and innovation. Everything that we do here involves teamwork and there are amazing professors with a small classes. MIT also has a great location as it is in Boston. To get into MIT, I applied during the fall of my senior year of high school and was accepted in December of my senior year. In high school I took a lot of challenging math and science classes to prepare.
Ci descrivi una giornata tipo al MIT?
Describe a typical day at MIT.
A: In una giornata tipica mi alzo alle 8 e vado a scuola dalle 9 alle 17. Poi dalle 17 alle 19 faccio hockey e dalle 19 all’una di notte i compiti.
In a typical day, I wake up at 8 am, then go to class from 9:00am -5:00pm, then go to field hockey practice from 5:00pm-7:00pm, and then do homework from 7:00 pm -1:00 am.
E: La mia giornata tipo al MIT è piena di impegni: mi sveglio alle 7:30, faccio colazione ed esco per lavorare un po' prima della lezione delle 9. Di solito ho lezione fino alle 13 e poi vado a lavorare nel laboratorio di chimica fino alle 17/ 18 circa. Successivamente, vado in biblioteca oppure torno nel mio dormitorio dove, prima di dedicarmi al problem solving, ceno con gli amici. Per concludere la giornate, io e i miei amici facciamo dei giochi oppure guardiamo la tv.
My typical day at school is busy. I'll wake up at 7:30 a.m., eat breakfast, and leave to do work before class at 9 am. I usually have class until about 1 pm, and then I will work in a chemistry research lab until five or six p.m. Then, I will either go the library or back to my dormitory, and eat dinner with friends before doing psets and work until about 11 pm. My friends and I might play a few games or watch TV to end the day.
Sarai a Como per qualche settimana, quali obiettivi personali e professionali hai?
You spent a few weeks in Como: what did you aim at reaching both personally and professionally while you were here?
A: A Como spero di poter migliorare il mio italiano e imparare più cose possibili sulla cultura italiana. Spero anche di migliorare le mie capacità di insegnamento e di apprendere nuovi metodi per spiegare gli argomenti.
In Como, I hoped to improve my Italian language skills and learn as much about the Italian culture that I could. I also hoped to improve on my teaching abilities and learn new ways to teach topics.
E: Ho sempre nutrito un interesse nei confronti dell'insegnamento. Ho seguito molte lezioni di didattica al MIT e l'anno prossimo vorrei seguire un corso per poter prendere l'abilitazione all'insegnamento. Insegnare a Como ha contribuito a rafforzare questa decisione. Mi è piaciuto tutto di questa esperienza, sia i momenti positivi sia quelli più difficili, che mi hanno permesso di prendere seriamente in considerazione la carriera di insegnante. Personalmente, volevo vivere in profondità la cultura italiana e credo che abitare a Como trascorrendo interi pomeriggi a scoprire nuovi luoghi mi abbia consentito di sperimentare la vita italiana più di quanto potessi fare da semplice turista.
I have always had an interest in education. I have taken many education classes at MIT, and I want to do a program next year that will grant me a teaching license in America—teaching in Como helped solidify that decision. I loved everything about teaching, through all the challenges and good moments, and it makes me seriously consider education in some form as a career path. Personally, I wanted to really experience Italian culture and life, and I think living in Como and spending afternoons exploring helped me experience life in Italy more than I ever could if I was just traveling through.
Come valuti la tua esperienza alle Orsoline? Con i docenti? Con le classi?
How do you judge your experience in our school? Did you get along with the teachers and the students?
A: L’esperienza alle Orsoline è stata magnifica. Sia studenti che docenti sono stati molto accoglienti e mi hanno fatta sentire a casa. Mi è piaciuto imparare gli aspetti della cultura italiana dagli studenti e mi sono divertita a rispondere alle loro domande sull’America. La Prof.ssa Simona Donzelli è stata incredibilmente di aiuto nel farmi acclimatare nella scuola, mostrandomi i laboratori e il resto della struttura.
I had a great experience with Orsoline. The teachers and students were very welcoming and made me feel right at home. I loved getting to learn about the Italian culture from the students and had a lot of fun answering their questions about America. Prof Donzelli was extremely helpful in getting me acclimated to the school and showing me around the lab and other facilities.
E: Ho molto apprezzato la mia esperienza alle Orsoline. Lavorare con la Prof.ssa Basilico è stato incredibile: è un'insegnante scrupolosa e di talento, che mi ha dato consigli preziosi. Mi è piaciuto insegnare nei diversi indirizzi: credo che ognuno abbia punti di forza e debolezze. Penso (e spero) che anche gli studenti abbiano vissuto momenti piacevoli, sia in laboratorio che in classe.
I loved teaching at Orsoline. Working with Profesora Basilico was incredible; she is a gifted and dedicated teacher, and she gave me valuable feedback very frequently. I loved teaching all of the different sections; though each class has different challenges and strengths, I think (and hope) they all had some enjoyable moment, either in the lab or in a class activity.
In cosa si differenzia, a tuo avviso, la didattica promossa dal Mit e quella attivata alle Orsoline?
As far as you know, what are the main differences between our school and American high schools?
A: Nella vostra scuola gli studenti sono separati in diversi indirizzi liceali e seguono lezioni differenti. Questa cosa mi ha sorpreso. Nelle high school americane tutti gli studenti seguono lo stesso programma. Inoltre gli studenti americani possono scegliere più liberamente quali corsi seguire e spesso seguono le lezioni con studenti più grandi o più piccoli. Sono rimasta sorpresa anche dal fatto che gli studenti italiani rimangano sempre nella stessa classe tutto il giorno. In America è il docente a stare nella stessa classe e gli studenti si muovono da una classe all’altra. In Italia i metodi di insegnamento sono molto più basati sulla teoria, mentre in America si laboratori. Ho fatto laboratori in ogni lezione di high school e sempre come lavoro di gruppo.
Your school had students separated into different lyceums, all taking separate different classes which surprised me. In American high schools, all of the students are in the same program in high school. American students also have a lot of freedom in choosing which classes they take and often take classes with students both older and younger than them. It was also very surprising to me that the students stay in the same room all day in Italy. In America, the teachers stay in the same room all day and the students move from room to room. In Italy, the teaching methods are much more theory based whereas American high schools are much more lab based. I did labs in every single physics lesson in High School and everything was group-based.
E: La più grande differenza tra la scuola italiana e quella americana (oltre alla durata degli studi: cinque anni in Italia e quattro negli States) è la struttura vera e propria. In America, gli studenti seguono le materie con compagni sempre diversi e in aule differenti; è lo studente che si sposta, non gli insegnanti. Tuttavia, credo che i metodi didattici siano gli stessi.
The biggest difference between school in Italy and America (besides from the 5 versus 4 years) is the actual structure. In America, each subject you have with different people in different room; it is the students that move around, not the teachers. I do think the teaching methods themselves are similar, though.
Cosa auguri agli allievi di Como che seguono le tue lezioni?
Is there something that you would like to wish our students?
A: Vorrei augurare loro buona fortuna per qualunque cosa facciano! È stato molto bello conoscerli e spero che abbiano imparato qualcosa di fisica e matematica e anche sull’MIT e le high school in America.
I would like to wish the students the best of luck in everything that they do! I had an amazing time getting to know them and hope they got to learn a little bit of physics and math and about MIT and high school in America.

Quali sono i momenti che porterai con te negli USA?
What are the happiest moments in your Italian experience that you will not forget?
A: Il momento più felice è stato quando ero in cucina con i bambini della mia famiglia ospitante e loro mi facevano domande sui balli americani. Abbiamo passato 5 ore cantando e ballando, durante le qual iio insegnavo loro balli americani e loro mi insegnavano quelli italiani.Un secondo momento è stato quando abbiamo fatto il laboratorio di polizia scientifica con gli studenti di 4 GELM. È stato fantastico vederli coinvolti nel lavoro e vederli usare le tecniche che avevamo insegnato in classe. Mi è piaciuto molto anche il pranzo con la 3 e 4 SC, poiché è stato il momento migliore per conoscerci meglio. Grazie per avermi ospitato alle Orsoline. The happiest moment was when I was in the kitchen with the children in my host family, and the children were asking me about American dances. We then spent 5 hours singing and dancing, with me teaching them American dances and them teaching me Italian dances. Another happiest moment was doing the forensics lab with the 4GELM students. It was amazing to see how invested in the lab they were and how much they liked using the techniques we taught them in class. I also really enjoyed having lunch with the 3SC and 4SC students. This was the best environment for me to get to know them and for them to get to know me.Thank you again for having me at Orsoline. E: Credo che uno dei momenti più belli sia stato il giro in barca sul lago di Como. Ho visto posti meravigliosi che mi hanno lasciato a bocca aperta! Per quanto riguarda l'insegnamento, invece, credo che non mi dimenticherò della lezione tenuta durante il laboratorio sulla scena del crimine.
I think one of the happiest moments was just taking a boat around Lake Como. I got to see so much of a beautiful place, and it made me in awe of how beautiful everything is. My happiest teaching moment, I think, was the crime scene lab!
